Histadrut chairman Ofer Eini today reiterated its threat to call a general strike next week over contract workers, after negotiations with the Ministry of Finance to directly hire contract workers deadlocked.
Eini told “IDF Radio" (Galei Zahal) this morning, "Regrettably, Ministry of Finance officials are prisoners of their world view that cost savings should be on the backs of workers, and they have torpedoed this measure and the understandings that were nearly closed. As soon as I saw that we reached a place where we were going backwards, there was no choice but to call a strike."
Eini said, "The prime minister has acted fairly and gives the impression that he really wants to reach a deal, because he knows that there's a problem here. He understands that if you want social justice, this is what you have to do."
The Histadrut's basic demand is for the direct hiring of the maximum number of contract workers, especially by the public sector, so that these workers will benefit fully from their salaries and benefits, rather than the employment agencies. The Histadrut says that the measure will not cost employers more.
