Bethel Finance news:

"Uncertainty in Syria is liable to cause collapse, and we don’t know what we will get in its place," said former Turkish foreign minister Yaşar Yakış at the "Globes" Israel Business conference "The new Middle East: a dream or a nightmare?" panel today. "We don’t know the agenda of the opposition, and we'll have to wait on developments."

Yakış said, "From the perspective of the Middle East as a whole, the international community faces a dilemma. Should it support the opposition in each of these countries, or ignore the attacks on human rights? This is also the dilemma between idealism and realism.

"Ignoring or staying indifferent to the distress is liable to weaken the world's standing and control of developments in these countries. Turkey is determined to play a more central role in these disputes. But Turkey faces limits. For example, the Ottoman Empire is still perceived as being identified with us by the Arab world. The Turks understand the Arab mentality, and it should be stated that Turkish intervention, should it occur, will be sensitive and delicate."

Yakış concluded, "In the long term, when democracy is established there, we can expect calm in the Arab world. Liberalism and secularism will rule in the countries, and radical Islam will have to cooperate with moderate parties."
