Minister of Transport Israel Kataz today adopted the recommendations of Civil Aviation Authority head Giora Rom and approved a fourth daily flight between Ben Gurion Airport and Eilat for El Al Israel Airlines Ltd. (TASE: ELAL).
The permit allows El Al to increase its daily passenger capacity to and from Eilat from 430 seats in each direction to 580 seats in each direction - on four daily flights in each direction instead of the current three.
Katz said that allowing El Al to become a third domestic carrier to Eilat alongside Arkia Airlines Ltd. and Israir Airlines and Tourism Ltd. had increased competition between the three Israeli airlines, lowered fares to Eilat, and increased the number of flights to the Red Sea resort.
Ministry of Transport figures show that between August 2010 and January 2011, 121,000 passengers flew to Eilat, up 24% from the corresponding period the previous year.
