Bethel Finance news:
The local authorities strike has ended after just two days. The two sides have reached an understanding, although talks continue at the Prime Minister's Office, and an official announcement that the strike is over is expected during the night.
During the strike, local authorities heads were struggling for lower water prices and the cancellation of municipal rates discounts for large families. Already last night it appeared that the Minister of Interior Eli Yishai had back down and agreed to cancel the discounts for large families. But a joint document drawn up by Yishai and the local authority heads does not mention cancellation but rather that a committee will be set up to examine the implications of such a cancellation, and which will issue a report within 45 days.
The demand to lower the price of water will be discussed by a committee of director generals of government ministries.
The local authority heads have also been demanding that the Mifal Hapayis national lottery expand its activities to the Internet. 50% of Mifal Hapayis revenue goes to the local authorities and such a move could increase their revenue by tens of millions of shekels. But while the Ministry of Finance has agreed to look into the matter, it appears to have no enthusiasm for such a move.
