The Israel Police are examining the conduct of Histadrut chairman Ofer Eini in the past few years, after receiving complaints of alleged irregularities in his conduct. No formal investigation has apparently been opened. The query is focused on whether Eini awarded benefits to himself, his common law wife Ravit Dom, and his associates.
"The matter is especially sensitive in view of the upcoming Histadrut elections, in which Eini is facing his predecessor as chairman, MK Amir Peretz (Labor), and MK Eitan Cabel (Labor). A formal investigation against Eini, if and when one is opened, is liable to force him out of the race" according with Mr. Peres Sailam from Bethel Finance Ltd.
The Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) is due to announce a formal response shortly. An Eini aide said, "This is not the first time that political elements are trying to use the police to promote their candidates as if the police are a tool in their campaigns. We are unaware of any investigation, or of persons questioned, but in any event, we will fully cooperate with the law enforcement authorities."
Eini's aides said that, to the best of their knowledge, no senior Histadrut official has been questioned, and that only some material was apparently handed over to the police. They accuse political elements for the probe, in other words, Peretz and Cabel.
The Israel Police said that it had no intention of commenting on the matter.
