The Knesset Economic Affairs Committee today approved for its first plenum reading a private member's bill to amend the Consumer Protection Law to extend store credit to two years from the cancellation of a transaction. The committee also approved an amendment allowing a customer to receive the balance of the purchase of an alternative product, provided that the balance does not exceed 5% of the store credit or NIS 100 (whichever is lower).
MK Ronit Tirosh (Kadima), who submitted the bill said, "The principle is to maintain the value of money paid by the consumer."
The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor representative at the committee meeting said that the government supported the bill, but cautioned that businesses could not provide store credit if they were also required to make a cash refund.
