Bethel Finances: Wed: Banks deflate market

The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE) fell today. The Tel Aviv 25 Index fell 0.81% to 1,238.56 points, the Tel Aviv 100 Index fell 0.72% to 1,130.40 points, and the TechBlue 50 Index fell 0.26% to 282.15 points. Turnover was NIS 1.21 billion.

After the positive signs of the past few days following approval of the Greek austerity program, global economic concerns are again on the rise with Moody's cutting Portugal's rating, while S&P warned on Greece's future. Consequently, yesterday's small falls on the TASE gathered pace today into something more substantial.

In the foreign currency market, the shekel-dollar representative exchange rate rose 0.26% to NIS 3.42/$, and the shekel-euro representative exchange rate fell 0.77% to NIS 4.902/€.

In the bond market, both long-term Shahar bonds and long- term Galil CPI-linked bonds rose by up to 0.4% and 0.1% respectively. The corporate bond benchmark Tel-Bond 20 Index was unchanged.

One of the day's biggest losers was Gazit-Globe Ltd. (TASE: GLOB), which fell 3% without making any announcement.

Bank's shares also lost ground with UBS lowering its expectation that Bank Leumi (TASE: LUMI) will distribute dividends between 2011 and 2013. Leumi fell 2.1% with the day's highest trading turnover of NIS 77 million. Bank Hapoalim (TASE: POLI) fell 2% and the Banking Index was down 1.9%.

Fuel company Paz Oil Company Ltd. (TASE:PZOL) fell 1% after the International Air Transport Association issued a report that the company was responsible for the contaminated jet fuel at Ben Gurion Airport in May.

Clal Finance said today that despite the problems faced in the cellular carrier tender for a fifth company , there is still a good chance that a solutions will be found so that "There is still pressure on the cellular companies." Partner Communications Ltd. (Nasdaq: PTNR; TASE: PTNR) rose by 0.7% today while Cellcom Israel Ltd. (NYSE:CEL; TASE:CEL) was down 0.2%.

Bucking the trend Ormat Industries Ltd. (TASE: ORMT) rose 3.5%, with Migdal Insurance and Financial Holdings Ltd. (TASE: MGDL) becoming a part at interest in Ormat today after investing NIS 3 million to raise its holding.

Israel Land Development Company Energy Ltd. (TASE: IE) countinues to attract high trading turnover after announcing the gas potential in the Myra and Sarah licenses. The share was unchanged today after rising 18.4% yesterday. Modiin Energy LP (TASE:MDIN.L), which is also a licensee, fell 2% after rising 8.9% yesterday.

Silicom Ltd. (Nasdaq:SILC; TASE:SILC), which reported a $1 million contract for its communications connectivity solutions, rose 1%.
