Bethel Finance: MKs awarded pay rise

Bethel Finance news:
A storm erupted at today's Knesset Finance Committee meeting when the participants were informed by a committee member that MKs received cost-of-living pay hike last month at the same time that public transportation fares were raised.

MK Marina Solodkin (Kadima) said, "I am ashamed to show my face to my neighbors when public transport fares were raised at the same time that MKs received a pay hike."

MK Shay Hermesh (Kadima) took umbrage at the comparison, saying, "A public committee chaired by Prof. Gronau decides MKs' salaries."

Finance Committee chairman MK Moshe Gafni (United Torah Judaism) supported Solodkin, saying, "Raising MKs' salaries, especially now, is problematic. The Finance Committee will discuss and decide on the issue of salaries of senior government officials - the president, prime minister, ministers, judges, and religious judges - and a proposal will be submitted to link their salaries to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the average national salary in equal shares, and not just to the average salary, because this creates distortions. The linkage to the average salary is theft of the public's money. MKs' salaries are not under the authority of the Finance Committee, but a decision on senior officials' salaries requires reference to MKs' salaries."
