Jazz Semiconductor Inc., the US subsidiary of specialty foundry Tower Semiconductor Ltd. (Nasdaq: TSEM; TASE: TSEM), is collaborating with the US Department of Defense's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Tower and Jazz operate under the brand name TowerJazz.

Jazz and DARPA will develop high frequency SiGe HBT (heterojunction bipolar transistor) devices under DARPA's GRATE (Gratings of Regular Arrays and Trim Exposures) program to use grating masks combined with conventional photolithography to achieve very fine dimension features as an alternative to more costly lithography techniques such as immersion lithography. The grating masks will be used in combination with the standard masks in volume production of semiconductors.

TowerJazz has partnered with the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) for novel circuit demonstrations using the new technology platforms and to test the HBT devices and their components.

Tower's share price fell 1.3% on Nasdaq yesterday to $1.12, giving a market cap of $295 million, and fell 1.8% in early trading on the TASE today to NIS 3.78.
