Bethel Finance news:
Former Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) chairman MK Amir Peretz (Labor) may challenge Histadrut chairman Ofer Eini for the job, according to Peretz aides. Peretz was Histadrut chairman for ten years, and is a former chairman of the Labor Party and defense minister.
The Histadrut will hold elections in May, and if Peretz runs, he will have to set up a new Knesset faction because of his failure to persuade the Labor Party to put up a candidate of its own instead of automatically supporting Eini. Peretz's spokeswoman said that he has received calls from sources at the Histadrut and elsewhere to run, but that he was not dealing with the matter at this time.
Sources inform ''Globes'' that, in the past few days, Peretz has spoken with the heads of worker committees. They said that Peretz has rejected the possibility of running. One of his aides said that his position was greatly weakened because of Eini's strength in the Histadrut and Labor Party, and that if Eini tries to recruit more for the Party, Peretz could find himself outside the Knesset after the next elections.
The source said that Peretz might run for the Histadrut chairmanship knowing that he will lose, but that he would at least improve his position in the union through an independent list that would indirectly strengthen his position in the Labor Party.
