12,000 Israelis donated NIS 720,000 to Wikipedia in 2011, 152% more than the NIS 285,000 donated by 3,500 Israelis in 2010. Israelis donated NIS 140,000 to Wikipedia in 2009.
Altogether, Wikipedia raised more than $20 million from over one million donors in 2011, more than double the amount that it raised in 2010.
"Our model is working fantastically," said Wikipedia Foundation executive director Sue Gardner, following the closing of the annual donations campaign. "People are used to using Wikipedia, they love it, and they are willing to donate some money so that it will continue to thrive.
