The Supreme Court this morning has rejected the appeal by former President Moshe Katsav. The three judges upheld the decision by the Tel Aviv District Court in March 2011 to convict Katsav on two counts of rape and other sexual misdemeanors and sentence him to seven years in prison, an additional two years suspended sentence and compensation of NIS 125,000 to be paid to the plaintiffs.
Judge Miriam Naor, who led the three judge Supreme Court panel, opened proceedings by saying, "Our verdict is unanimous. Regarding "A" at the Ministry of Tourism - The District Court convicted on two counts of rape and forced sex. The District Court found "A" credible and there is no justification for intervening regarding the plausibility of "A"."
Judge Naor added, "If "A" had wanted revenge on Katsav she could have done so before he became president of the State. And if we are talking about a libel she could have made up another story and not said that the first rape took place on a day that was not a regular work day in the Ministry of Tourism. We reject the defense claims to quash the testimony of A."
